Kinetico Non-Electric Twin-Tank Softeners: Worth the Premium?

Kinetico is the brand that comes up when a dealer pitches a softener with "no electricity, two tanks, and soft water 24/7." Those features are real, and they're documented in Kinetico's own spec pages and owner's manuals. The question is whether they're worth paying more than a single-tank Clack or Fleck system for your house. This page explains what the twin-tank design does, what the published specs say, what the alternatives are, and what to ask before you sign. We are not affiliated with Kinetico or any dealer.

How a Kinetico twin-tank softener works

A typical single-tank softener with an electronic Clack or Fleck valve can also be set to regenerate on demand with a meter, but it usually regenerates at a set time (often overnight) and supplies hard or untreated water while it does (see Clack vs Fleck valves).

The published Kinetico specs

Kinetico sells two non-electric twin-tank lines: Signature Series and Premier XP. These are the numbers Kinetico publishes; your dealer's performance data sheet for the exact model is the final word.

ModelWhat Kinetico publishes
Signature Series 735Two 7" x 35" tanks, 0.50 cu ft of resin per tank, up to 40 gpg compensated hardness, 1.4 gpm backwash, 15 to 125 psi, 35 to 120°F.
Signature Series 935Two 9" x 35" tanks, 0.75 cu ft per tank, up to 60 gpg compensated hardness, 2.0 gpm backwash, 15 to 125 psi, 35 to 120°F.
Premier XP S150 XP and S250 XPTwin-tank, non-electric. Kinetico says the S250 XP is "calibrated precisely to your water" with its patent-pending XP feature. One tank works at a time.
Premier XP S650 OD XPAdds Overdrive, which runs water through both tanks at once in normal use for higher flow and less pressure loss; one tank keeps serving during regeneration.
Premier XP Q850 OD XPOverdrive softener plus two extra filter tanks: activated carbon for chlorine, or Chloraban or Sulfaban for chloramine.

Kinetico's softener page lists a 10-year warranty on its top twin and multi-tank line and a 5-year warranty on another line. Ask for the warranty on your exact model, in writing, split by valve, tanks, and resin.

The "world's most efficient" claim, explained

Kinetico says the S650 OD XP and Q850 OD XP are the world's most efficient softeners, based on WQA testing to NSF/ANSI 44 showing 5,393 grains of hardness removed per pound of salt at the 0.8 lb salt setting.

The Fleck 9100 is the most common "twin-tank without Kinetico" option: Pentair's spec sheet lists a 20 gpm continuous service flow, tanks from 6" to 16", and says it saves salt and water by using 100% of the tank in service before switching. It's electric, though, and it's set up and serviced by whoever sells it to you.
